Resistance Bands vs. Dumbbells
Are you debating whether to use resistance bands or dumbbells in your exercise program?
Shaun T’s Insanity uses body resistance, so you won’t need either one.
However, P90X does a lot of resistance training using bands or dumbbells, and you have to have one or the other in order to complete the program.
Resistance bands do a good job of toning and sculpting your muscles while not adding a lot of bulk. This is why many women prefer resistance bands in their exercise programs. Dumbbells, on the other hand, will give you more muscle mass. So the decision depends on what your goals are. If you want to tone up, get bands – they work great and are very convenient for traveling. If you want to bulk up, get a set of dumbbells.

Helpful Accessories for P90X
A few people have asked me what equipment is necessary or just helpful to have throughout the course of P90X. Here I will list the equipment that is required and equipment which is just helpful to have.
Required:
- P90X Chin-Up Bar or B-LINES Bands Super Kit (best seller among men), or B-LINES Bands Standard Kit (best seller among women), or a set of dumbbells.
- Chair
- Towel
That is all that’s absolutely required to do the exercises P90X contains. Now, there is certain other equipment which will definitely make many of the exercises more effective.

Optional (I highly recommend):
- Heart rate monitor
- Bar stool (29”)
- Push-up stands
- Yoga/general exercise mat
- Yoga blocks
- Body fat tester
- Water bottle
If you have the optional equipment, you’ll find many of the exercises to be more effective than if you performed them without it. Also, it can make many of the exercises more convenient or easier to perform.
